A Boneafide Product Review: Heartworm Preventative

Ever since I, Bobo, was a wee tiny lil boy I have been taking the heartworm Preventative Heartgard. My vet Dr. Flanary said it would keep my heart free of the yucky heartworms and keep me healthy. When Mollie Jo joined our family we had her tested for heartworms (test was negative) and she was put on Heartgard too. For many years it kept us safe.

One day we were picking up some Heartgard and noticed a new sign advertising a generic heartworm preventative called Iverhart Max. Momma asked about it and the vet tech said that it is the same ingederience as Heartgard just in a pill form instead of chewable. Well Momma decided to do her own research before purchasing it.

She went on the Iverhart Max Website and found that is it the same ingederient (ivermectin) for heartworms. It also listed other medicines that take care of many other worms listed below in the comparison chart.

So after much debate betwen momma and grandma they decided that we would try the new medicine. We made the switch back in November 2009 and haven't had one problem since.

Now Heartgard has one positive that its a beef chewable. Iverhart Max is a small tan pill...and you know how ruff it is for pups to take pills....but momma wraps it up in a small piece of cheese...so that makes it all better.

Iverhart Max is on average about 3.25 a pill verses 4.50 a pill for Heartgard. With two dogs that is a difference that really adds up since we keep them on it year round. Now we don't heartworm test yearly or bi-yearly, but plan in November to get tested to see if one year on Iverhart Max has kept us heartworm free. We will let you know how that goes then.

Overall we give Iverhart Max a A+. Its our prefered heartworm medicine!

Wags and Licks,
Mollie Jo & Bobo

***Disclaimer: Do not switch heartworm medicines before consulting your vet. Your vet may or may not require a heartworm test before allowing you to switch to the new medicine. Heartworm medicine must be give every month on the same day to fully protect your pet.

  1. Thanks for the recommendation! Mum will check into it because with three of us, it is expensive to keep up-to-date on medicines!

  2. We wish our vet offered Iverhart - because Piper doesn't like Heartguard. Mom has to slice his up in little pieces and then protect him from the girls while he eats it ever so slooooowwwwwly. With that little pill, it would be gone in a single gulp.

  8. Wow that is great that you were able to switch with no problems - and that is costs less but covers more! It is so great of you to let everyone know about it too - sure, we are cats so we don't take that stuff, but we still think it is interesting to read about.

  9. That is good information because those pills are payed for by the pound so you can imagine what a year's supply for the Mango costs. I will have momma ask about the swallow pills since I have no problem with that.

  10. I have been given this to use before for my foster dogs - I didn't realize it was even better than the Interceptor I buy for my own dogs! Thanks for the very informative post! Oh, and just FYI, my foster dogs all swallow this pill happily even though its not a beef chewable. I guess it still has a good flavor because they like it (and they won't swallow just any old pill! - except Ziggy - he swallows rocks and sticks and anything he can get in his mouth).

  11. We too are on Interceptor and with three of us, it sure gets expensive. Then add in the flea and tick stuff and it is really expensive. We will talk to our vet about Iverhart - thanks for the review.

    Have a great weekend.
