Ticked and Tickled Thursday

Well momma is super ticked today. We will let her tell you why.

From the Momma: On last nights local news they featured a story about leaving children in hot cars and reported that this year so far 5 cases have been reported. In this day and age why on earth are these cases still happening. What I find even more disturbing is the fact that at no time in the segment did they mention the dangers of leaving pets in parked cars. It is something that happens more often than you would hope to think. Last year I counted 22 dogs in parked cars from the months of June through August and I live in a small city. I personally call the local animal control every time I see a dog left unattended in a hot parked car. 99% of the time they do nothing but it gets peoples attention that this not ok.

In addition to calling animal control I leave a flyer stating the facts on leaving a dog in a hot parked car. Please feel free to copy the text, put it in a word document, and print out your own flyers.

----Beggining of Flyer----
Summer is here and leaving your pet unattended in a parked car can be a deadly mistake!

The Facts:
* On a 75 degree day the temperature inside a parked car can reach 125 degrees in a matter of just 30 minutes.
* Cracking car windows will do little to reduce the heat inside of a parked car. Cracked windows provide no air circulation. It also gives people the chance to reach in and take a small dog.
* Once a dogs temperature reaches 105 degrees they can suffer from heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke in a matter of minutes. When this happens, many organs such as the kidney, liver, brain, and heart begin to shut down.
* Dogs with pug-like noses, seniors, dogs with long coats and young puppies are extremely susceptible to heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Please take these facts into consideration before taking your dog with you and leaving them in your car on a hot summer day!
----End of Flyer----

Please never approach an owner with the flyer as this may lead to a confrontation. I have had my fair share of angry owners tell me to (not so nicely) to stay out of their business. Just slip it in a cracked window or under the windshield wiper.

Now I will return you to the paws of Mollie Jo and Bobo.

  1. Hi, That is a great idea about leaving the paper on the dashboard. I'm going to do that. But your right about not confronting them. I'm a chicken anyways! Congratulations on your award!

  3. ConCats on your award! We love your mommy's answers too! And mom is going to copy the flyer as she will also print it out. And our mom is so outspoken she'll confront anyone who leaves animals in the car (she hasn't (thankfully) come across a child), and she already has. Mom says what's on her mind!

  5. hey kids, thanks for that post about leaving dogs in parked cars. that's a good reminder this time of year. our human is obsessed about that subject too. (right next to breakaway collars) we heard a story about a stupid human who left their dog in a hot parked car for an hour and when the human came back the dog was unconscious. they took it to the vet and it recovered, but some dogs are not that lucky. we just don't understand how humans can be so thoughtless and STUPID. it makes our human very very sad and angry.

    whew....

    woofs.

  6. On the very FEW times that I have to stay in the car in the summer... my mom always takes 4 big frozen thingys and puts them on the seats for me to lay on. Plus she always cracks the windows. BUTT, it doesn't happen very often and Never for more than 15 mins..
AND Jennifer Jeeps windows are tinted.
Mom just HATES to leave me even for that little bit, butt emergencies do arrise.
Grrreat choices for the Award. I loved your list.

  9. We like your idea of leaving the information on the window.
Last year two police dogs died in the UK. We were astounded that dog handlers would have left their dogs in a parked car on a warm day!
Good work with the tag mom.
    Loved the new Header pic.

  10. Good for you leaving the flyers on the cars!! Hopefully it will at least make 1 person get to thinking. I never leave Lilibell and Chewy in a car, not even when it's not hot out.

Mum knows a k-9 guy that leaves his German Shepard iin SUV. Now he's got a tricked out SUV. It has an alarm that will go off when da temp reaches a certain degree aaaand he ALWAYS leaves his running with da air on.

  12. We think those flyers are a great idea...and we are going to have Mama print some out! We don't get to go bye bye in the summer unless it is to the lake and even then Mama doesn't take us in the way hot weather.

  13. We think that the flyer your mom has is great - luckily we don't often see dogs in cars here but it always make us so mad when we do. Our mom has cards that she can put in cars that do that (they are for other stuff too - and they're not quite as polite as your moms flyers - but they have options you can check off, one being leaving the dog in the car). Our mom remembers that there was a commercial a while back about how hot it can get in a car even when it isn't super hot outside and thinks of it whenver she sees it. Again, luckily it doesn't seem to happen to often here.

And congrats on the award! Those were super intersting things to learn about your mom!!

  17. Fantastic informative post! Congratulations on your award too, but spreading awareness is more important of course. In California it's illegal to leave us in a car year round. That's a bit extreme, but I bet it's saved many many lives.
